Could Unlocked Cell Phones Save Lives?
Do you know the benefits of unlocked cell phones? They work faster, you can use unlocked cell phones on any network, and they are hunkered with preloaded carrier apps.
Could they also benefit you in an emergency?
Maybe. Cell phones in general have been seen to save lives in natural disasters including the earthquake in haiti, where people called for help, used their flashlight app, and kept hope alive. Of course, an increase in users strains networks in emergencies, and more recent (mild) US disastours have seen cell service overwhelmed.
What about unlocked cell phones?
Well, perhaps the best thing to have in an emergency is a plan with a good rate (or better, free) roaming. If your first priority is the hottest model of cell phone, it's a lot harder to get a carrier who won't nickle and dime you on roaming. Solution? Get your phone of choice as an unlocked cell phone. In an emergency, you don't want to think about an expensive bill (on top, potentially, of medical costs). Find a good carrier, but first find a good unlocked cell phone.
Some tips: Choose unlocked cell phones with a good battery life, or buy an extra battery and keep it charged. Look for something with a bright LCD screen, and make sure that you keep an "in case of emergency" number in your phone book!
