Can Popularity Gauge Future Cell Phone Support?

While Apple may have bested Android in the last quarter for app developers, Android is still on more phones than Apple's OS…will this data chang future app development?

While people with unlocked cell phones (in the jailbroken sense) can download whatever software they want, Apple's app/software is strictly screened, and some Android phones are co-opted by carriers to have software locked on (commonly Nascar and NFL apps, or an app store run by the carrier).

Apple maintains it's popularity as the number one phone for three reasons…it's a status symbol, Apple hardware is nice, and it's software is near flawless. But Android, to the savvy, unlocked cell phone loving consumer may have more functionality…certinaly being able to get Android on the phone of your choice is influencing its popularity. And Android phones are easier to turn into unlocked cell phones…your carrier may even (unofficially) help you do it! Just be really nice to whomever is helping you :)

Finally, the above data, you may note, is only representative of postpaid subscribers. What about people who pay-as-they-go? (and may be underepresented in the chart). Unlocked cell phones like Androids and Nokias are certainly a popular option, and so may include more of the market…although those consumers are less likely to be using apps/data!

If you are looking to buy a cell phone or go into unlocked cell phone use, consider the above data. There are more likely to be future apps made for Android!
