iPhone 4 is leading unlocked cell phones into the mainstream market

Gradually, unlocked cell phones have been coming to the US, not just through third parties but through international brands like Blu. Now, unlocked cell phones are taking one more step toward the main stream with Apple releasing the iPhone 4 as an unlocked cell phone.

While this is great for people who love jumping carriers with unlocked cell phones (like travelers), Apple's new release has limitations.

Price is probably the biggest limitation. While lovers of iPhones may not fully feel the sticker shock of the $649/$749 price tag (used iPhones can sell for over $1000), many unlocked cell phone connoisseurs will, as most unlocked cell phones can be obtained at quite affordable prices.

The second drawback is a limitation of carriers: the iPhone 4 won't be compatible with T-Mobile's 3G network, and in any case T-Mobile will soon be owned by AT&T. (Sprint is not a GSM network, so that just leaves Verizon…).

While that may not be great for people who want to bring their unlocked cell phones to a specific carrier, the second step of the unlocked cell phone revolution will likely be to further break the power of the carriers. Pay as you go plans, for instance, can be a more affordable option that works well with unlocked cell phones.

Will you be buying a new unlocked iPhone? What unlocked cell phones have you owned in the past?
