Unlocking Your Cell Phone

If you purchased your cell phone from your wireless provider, it is no doubt locked to their network, meaning you cannot use that phone on another network should you choose to change providers. Essentially, there are certain settings on phones sold by wireless providers that makes sure that consumers cannot buy a phone from their store and then go to a different service provider and activate it. However, by following a few simple steps, you can unlock your phone and enjoy the freedoms associated with an unlocked cell phone.

The process to unlock your phone is dependant on the particular make and model of your phone, but the basic steps are the same. If your phone has a SIM card, simply removing the SIM card and replacing it with a SIM card for another network is "unlocking" your phone. If you don't have a SIM card, you'll need to follow some simple steps to unlock your phone.

First, you'll need to find the IMEI number on your phone (usually under the battery). This code is linked to the code needed to unlock your phone and you will be asked for it. Once you have it, do one of the following:

1. Call your wireless provider for the fastest option. It may take some convincing on your part, but they should be able to give you the code if you have a good standing account and good history. If you plan to travel overseas, you can tell them that you'd like your phone unlocked so that you can use it overseas on a different network. All going well, they will give you the code and walk you through the process. Make sure you call on a phone that is not your wireless phone.

2. You can also purchase an unlock code for your model of phone from a third party. A quick Google search should provide you with plenty of options. Alternatively, you can look on eBay and find a seller with a good reputation.

3. Third party cell phone vendors, such as mall kiosks, often offer unlocking services. They will charge you a fee, but will also be able to test the phone to ensure that all features work on other networks.

Once you have the right code, the process can be easy or simple. Sometimes you will be prompted for an unlock code when you switch SIM cards, in which case you will need to do one of the aforementioned things. If you do not have a SIM card, you will need to contact the manufacturer or search online for instructions to follow.

Unlocked cellular phones are handy devices because they give you freedom to move from one network to another. In the end, you can save money on roaming and/or cancellation fees.
