How to get an Unlocked Blackberry

Many people have a want or need to unlock their blackberry cell phone.  It is important that if you decided to unlock your blackberry you do it properly.  There have been many phones permanently disabled because they were not unlocked properly.  There are several methods for getting your blackberry unlocked.

First of all, it's often easiest to simply purchase a Blackberry that is already unlocked versus buying a locked phone and attempting to unlock it.  Numerous third party vendors are available in most cities and online that offer a selection of unlocked Blackberry phones.

If you already have a Blackberry and just want to unlock the phone you have, there are at least three things you can do to unlock the phone, but be careful.

1)  You can talk to your wireless carrier to see if they will unlock the phone for you.  Chances are good that they will unlock your phone for you if you have been with them for a period of time and have an account in good standing.  Your best bet is to call customer service and see what they can do.  You may have to spend some time on the phone, but it will be worth it in the end.

2)  Many online sites, including Ebay, offer ways to purchase the unlock code for phones.  However, buyer beware!  It is not guaranteed that you'll get the correct software and codes to unlock your phone. You could very well end up with a phone that is only suitable to be a paperweight when you are done…

3)  There are several third parties that will unlock your Blackberry for a small fee.  Some may be located nearby which will allow you to stop in and wait while the service is performed.  If you don't have a local service, you'll have to mail your phone in to get it unlocked.  The benefit of these type of services is that they are generally pretty affordable and you'll have an unlocked Blackberry that is tested before it is returned to you.
